What is public key cryptography, or asymmetric cryptography?

Any cryptographic system that uses pairs of keys: public keys which may be disseminated widely, and private keys which are known only to the owner. This accomplishes two functions: authentication, which is when the public key is used to verify that a holder of the paired private key sent the message, and encryption, whereby only the holder of the paired private key can decrypt the message encrypted with the public key.

In a public key encryption system, any person can encrypt a message using the public key of the receiver, but such a message can be decrypted only with the receiver's private key. For this to work it must be computationally easy for a user to generate a public and private key-pair to be used for encryption and decryption. The strength of a public key cryptography system relies on the degree of difficulty (computational impracticality) for a properly generated private key to be determined from its corresponding public key. Security then depends only on keeping the private key private, and the public key may be published without compromising security.

What is Public Key Infrastructures(PKI)?

Set of roles, policies, and procedures needed to create, manage, distribute, use, store, and revoke digital certificates and manage public-key encryption. The purpose of a PKI is to facilitate the secure electronic transfer of information for a range of network activities such as e-commerce, internet banking and confidential email. It is required for activities where simple passwords are an inadequate authentication method and more rigorous proof is required to confirm the identity of the parties involved in the communication and to validate the information being transferred.

Certification Authorities(CA).

A certificate authority or certification authority (CA) is an entity that issues digital certificates. A digital certificate certifies the ownership of a public key by the named subject of the certificate. This allows others (relying parties) to rely upon signatures or on assertions made about the private key that corresponds to the certified public key. A CA acts as a trusted third party

Root CA
Root certificates are self-signed and form the basis of an X.509-based public key infrastructure (PKI).

Subordinate CAs
A subordinate CA is a CA that has been issued a certificate by another CA in your organization. Typically, a subordinate CA will issue certificates for specific uses, such as secure e-mail, Web-based authentication, or smart card authentication. Subordinate CAs can also issue certificates to other CAs that are more subordinate. Together, a root CA, the subordinate CAs that have been certified by the root, and subordinate CAs that have been certified by other subordinate CAs form a certification hierarchy.
